It is obviously the mission of the male adult human to dominate all aspects of nature, including children: ‘Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him’.5

It is highly probable that the domestication of animals was, to a great extent, at the root of ‘the rule of the father’. With the advent of animal husbandry, the procreative power of males became obvious. The man was the one bringing the ‘seeds’. The role of the woman was to be an incubator and provider of food. Before that time the procreative role of males was misunderstood, underestimated and even ignored. This was probably related to the long interval in our species between sexual intercourse and childbirth. The phenomenon of ‘Venus figurines’ is symbolic of the mystery of life. Over a hundred such figurines have been found all over the world, the oldest one dated to more than 35,000 years ago. All these figurines exaggerate the parts of the body related to pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, particularly the hips, abdomen, breasts, thighs and the vulva: the mystery of life was obviously related to the female principle in general.
